Quizzing the Secretary of State for Energy, Dunfermline & West Fife MP Willie Rennie has secured a commitment that the result of the carbon capture competition will be announced next year.
That could mean that Longannet Power Station could be at the forefront of Carbon Capture technology within a year.
Commenting Willie Rennie said:
'It's good news that we have a deadline for the development of this crucial technology for tackling climate change.
'I'm keen for Longannet to win the competition and Scottish Power are enthusiastic bidders having already installed the first mobile test unit for coal in Europe at the Kincardine plant.
'The deadlines of 2014 and 2020 are very tight and it's vital that we moved forward speedily to meet them.
'We've already seen one delay, we don't need another with such strict deadlines. I'll continue to press to make sure we move forward - and fast.'
